Gore Vidal on the BBC; Obama winning North Carolina ?
Gore Vidal is on the BBC. He just called the Republican Party a "Mayan sect." And berated his interviewer. I don't really know how to describe what just happened. But it was certainly interesting.
And if Obama is really winning North Carolina.. this is quite a significant turning point and a big surprise. Even John Edwards, who is from North Carolina, couldn't pull it off in 2004.

That was the most hilarious thing of the entire shambolic BBC coverage . . . well maybe on a par with the American gentleman with the grey mustache getting uppity about some decent journalistic questions and being ejected from the studio.
Gore Vidal going absolutely insane on live national TV was well worth staying up till 5:30am for even if the closing speeches were greatly disappointing for both parties.
The video of this momentous event must be uploaded immediately to share with future generations and the 5th of November, 2008 will from now on be known as the day Gore Vidal reinvented viral video.
Poor old Gore has clearly lost his marbles entirely but he once had some perfect insighs on US politics having failed as a democratic candidate.
[t]here is only one party in the United States, the Property Party...and it has two right wings: Republican and Democrat. Republicans are a bit stupider, more rigid, more doctrinaire in their laissez-faire capitalism than the Democrats, who are cuter, prettier, a bit more corrupt—until recently... and more willing than the Republicans to make small adjustments when the poor, the black, the anti-imperialists get out of hand. But, essentially, there is no difference between the two parties
But oh, so funny. That was certainly my highlight of the election coverage!
Saw it on the live stream, am currently searching for a copy and this post came up on Google relatively far up.
I liked especially the last part, where he said, he didn't knew the interviewer.
Very funny!
"WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED" I said as the confused studio panel and Dimbleby laughed at what had just transpired.
It just goes to show how unorganised the BBC actually is in that they got a man who was not even told who he would be speaking to.
He said that we should'nt compare the Republicans to the conservative party in the UK. He claimed that the republicans are only interested in keeping their business ties and contacts. However, this is clearly a problem in the UK aswell bacause we have seen our own share of dodgy dealings with russian billionaires and cash for honours scandles.
I believe Vidal was saying that the Republican party is a "mind set" - though "Mayan sect" sounds more interesting! Thanks for posting the link to the video - I saw this last night live during the election coverage and couldn't believe what I'd seen.
@6 GSB:
Thank you very much! Let me give some search engine context for that hilarious video: Gore Vidal on BBC about Obama's election 2008

He was indeed saying "mind set", though.
Thanks for posting the links to the video.
And while I think there is a strong possibility Mr. Vidal was actually saying "mind set," "mayan sect" is what it sounded like to me late at night... I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed the whole thing !
